Chapter 10

On the way home an odd smell permeated Morgan’s car again. It was the burnt wire smell that was becoming familiar to her, so she kept one eye on the mirror and the other on the road. Once she caught a red light, she took the opportunity to look directly into the back seat, but there was nothing there. Confused, she sat back in place and glanced at the car in the lane to her right. Rudy, her newly deceased neighbor, was the driver. He looked at her, nodded once, and looked straight ahead again. When the light changed, he made an immediate right turn. Morgan sat dazed, unable to move until the car behind her blew their horn. She peeled away from the light and drove like a bat out of hell to her house.

By the time she pulled up to her house, Savvy’s SUV was already there. Looking over the top of the newspaper in her hands and noticing Morgan, Savannah grinned. She sat on the top step of the porch and waited.

“Good afternoon, I’ve reported for duty as ordered. I also have assorted bagels, cream cheese, and chai tea.” Savvy put the paper down and lifted all the bags at once. “I would have brought some chocolate, as well, but feared that would become a highly orgasmic experience. Nonetheless, these foods cure most illnesses.” Savannah paused and added, “You’re as white as a ghost. Oh, sorry, poor choice of words, but what happened to upset you?”

“Well, I had a pretty darn creepy day. Come on in, my friend, because do I have a story for you.” Morgan’s hands shook as she tried to insert her key to unlock the front door. She added, “I can’t swear that I believe it all myself.”

As she finished speaking, the door popped, creaked, and opened wide before Morgan got the key in the lock. The aroma of freshly baked bread greeted the women.

“I thought you worked today. If I didn’t know better, I’d think my grandmother had been here since sunrise. You don’t bake do you, Morgan?”

Morgan looked at her friend and muttered, “You know very well that I can’t bake—I can barely find a bakery with a map.”

“I didn’t think you knew your way around a kitchen. That skill set requires using pans and that square oven appliance that you use for storage,” replied Savannah as she walked into the kitchen and placed her hand on the oven’s glass door.

“No heat.” Savvy turned to Morgan.

“I don’t know what to tell you. I smell the fresh bread in here as much as you do, and I don’t have a clue what it’s all about—I was at work.” Morgan looked around the room.

Savannah looked around, as well. “Well, besides gardening, my guess is that your ghostly roommates also bake. By the way, did you notice that the roses in your back yard are much taller and fuller than they were a couple of days ago? The colors are also far more vivid.
